          <datacite:description descriptionType="Abstract">In the present research the effect of exercise on serum energy substrates levels, tissue glycogen
levels and tissue yS -hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase (HAD) activities were examined with mice
fed different types of protein. Male ICR mice were divided into six groups, which were given
casein (OC), soybean protein (OS), gluten protein (OG), fish protein (OF), a mixture of fish
protein and casein protein, and a mixture fish protein and soybean protein (OSF) and were kept
individually on the experimental diet for about 70 days. Serum glucose levels showed a decrease
due to exercise in OC and OG, although a decrease was not observed in other groups. On the
other hand, serum free fatty acid levels observed a significant increase in all groups except for
OG. Soleus Muscle glycogen levels of OG and OF were decreased significantly with exercise ;
Such a phenomenon was not found in the other groups. Liver glycogen levels were significantly
decreased in all groups except for OS. Especially, the rate of decrease was greater in those of OC
and OG than in other groups. For fatty acid composition of liver triacylglycerol, oleic acid in all
group except for OG showed a decrease due to exercise. HAD activity of soleus muscle had a
tendency of increase with exercise in OC, OS, OF and OCF. Furthermore, those of OSF were
increased significantly. On the other hand, liver HAD activity in all groups showed an increase
or an increasing tendency due to exercise. The activity of OS was increased remarkably.
Considering the above findings, the present study suggests that soybean protein in the diet
may play an important role in effective utilization of free fatty acid as an energy source through
high activity of HAD in liver or muscle concerned with fatty acids metabolism.</datacite:description>
