内容記述 | This study tried to find the cultural background of Surnames, English names, and Addressing based on relationship in East Asia. There are many people who don't have a surname, use their father's name, or have an original surname. It is important to understand the structure and usage of names in East Asia. I interviewed people from Hong Kong and Singapore about their English names, which are a result of contact with western culture. There are some psychological purposes in using English names, for example, having a non-hierarchical freiendly relationship, or for experiencing another world. There are many phenomena involving changing names or changing pronunciation in the host country which I discussed. There are the outcome of cultural ethnic contacts, or assimilation. I distinguished 3 types of changing pronunciation, 1) Keeping Foreign Pronunciation (e.g. Singapore, Korea), 2) Changing to Dominant Society's Pronunciation (e.g. Taiwan), 3) Changing to Regional Pronunciation (e.g. Hong Kong). In East Asia, there existed a taboo of using the real name therefore they used a separate "nickname" (child name, popular name, Azana=alias), and addressing based on relationship, i.e. A's mother, B Manager, or C's husband. I discussed the psychological meaning of changing of names throughout life, using Azana or English name, and addressing based on relationship. Finally I showed some interviews of inter-marriage, where name changing and religion changing sometimes occur. I disscussed about multi-cultural and ethnic contacts and their outcome. | |||||
