内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to clarify the ascetic practices by Saito Shintaro (hereafter, Shintaro), who visited feudal clans in numerous places to teach swordsmanship during the late 1840s. He was one of three major instructors at the training center for kenjutsu (dojo), called renpeikan (military drill building), and he was the eldest son of Saito Yakuro, who was well known as one of the founders of the shintomunen-ryu style of martial arts during the late Tohugawa period. Shintaro was also famous as a swordsman of the late Tokugawa period. Shintaro participated in other school match with 11 training centers from 8 February 1847 to March 1849. Following this, Shintaro and his instructors performed ascetic practices in different countries from the Koka era (4 April) to the Kaei era (September). We clarified that historical materials entitled shoshu-shugyo-eimeiroku (hereafter, eimeiroku) revealed the influence of Shintaro's teachings from the Koka era (April) to the・Kaei era (March). This paper aims to clarify the ascetic practices by Shintaro after April 1849. The historical matter is recorded in historical materials entitled shugyo-chu-shohan-houmeiroku (hereafter, houmeiroku), which is a sequel to eimeiroku. Shintaro visited 61 feudal clans and practiced swordmanship with 1,281 swordsmen (led by a total of 59 instructors). In houmeiroku, Shintaro's area of activity is geographically smaller than what it is claimed to be in eimeiroku, And according to the former, the ascetic practices were frequently carried out in the same place. Particularly in the Choshu clan, a laIrge number of swordsmen participated in training with Shintaro's instructors. Furthermore, some swordsmen became disciples of Saito Yakuro or Shirntaro, while others switched their school (ryuha) to the shintomunen-ryu school in the Choshu and Ohmura Clans. |
