内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to formulate teaching material about the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement for the junior high and high school curriculum in Japan. According to the junior high and high school course of study, which is under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology, teachers for physical education lessons should explain the Olympic Games and Olympic Movement, and clarify the differences between them. As an outcome, the students in junior high and high schools must understand the differences and formulate correct concepts about each of them. The modern Olympic Games are generally known as a major international event featuring summer and winter sports in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The creation of these events was inspired by the ancient Olympics, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from BC776 to AD393. In 1894, an International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed with Pierre de Coubertin, a French baron, as one of the central figures. Coubertin had been thinking about education for youth through sports, and his scheme finally took shape as the modern Olympic Games in 1896. The IOC has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement, with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority. The Olympic Movement consists of international sports federations (IFs), National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and the organizing committees that meet each time the Olympic Games are held. The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. The IOC has had to adapt to the varying economic, political, and technological realities, including the dignity of man and the preservation of the environment. The doctrine of Olympism is considered a social philosophy that emphasizes the role of sports in world development, international understanding, peaceful co-existence, and social and moral education. Coubertin understood, towards the end of the nineteenth century, that sports was about to become a major growth point in popular culture and that, as physical activity, it was apparently universalisable, providing a means of contact and communication across human cultures of the twentieth century. Therefore, the Olympic Movement has succeeded in furthering the education of youth through sports, fulfilling Coubertin's vision. |
