| 内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to examine the establishment of city parks and recreation grounds during the 1880s, comparing certain densely populated districts in the county of London with other county boroughs. Surveys of the entire county of London indicated the existence of several popular delusions regarding population density in different districts, and efforts to secure open spaces and relieve overcrowding were not always directed to the necessary areas. Philanthropists and philanthropic organisations acquired some open spaces in large cities, which they considered the most effective means of counteracting the danger of increasing population density that threatened city dwellers in England. Local authorities intended to provide pleasant parks and gardens for the elderly, and playgrounds where children might exercise their limbs. As town planning advanced, it was found that well-regulated cities indicated reduced mortality than the countryside where greater carelessness regarding hygiene prevailed. However, open spaces and recreation grounds in large cities have been exceedingly unfavourable for residents in great cities such as London. Without full-scale legislation by the central and local authorities, the establishment and enlargement of open spaces and recreation grounds gradually advanced in urban county boroughs during the late 19th century in England. | |||||
