内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 To date, despite reports about the use of tactical approaches such as Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) in many sports, little published application of it has appeared concerning the learning of any martial art.
This peper shows an attempt to apply a TGfU approach to the teaching of kendo in the Physical Education (PE) curriculum in a Japanese secondary school. A ‘Teaching Kendo for Understanding' approach was implemented for one year in the PE curriculum of a Japanese secondary school using action research involving the author and a secondary school teacher.
The biggest challenge was knowing how to encourage pupils to learn a traditional Japanese martial art whilst using a tactical approach to providing them with enjoyable learning experiences.
The learning was divided into seven stages: 1) free fencing, 2) and 3) two forms of modified matches, 4) team building, strategic planning and execution, 5) individual matches, 6) team matches, 7) official championship. The results showed that this approach to kendo made a significant contribution in developing pupils' understanding in both the traditional and competitive domains of kendo.
